Finding something interesting to do with LiveView

Ok, I’ve been tinkering with the LiveView and to be honest, whilst it is interesting and it does demonstrate that the whole smartwatch thing has moved on since the Fossil Palm OS watch, I don’t have a real use for it in it’s current form.

I guess the main problem with it is that it doesn’t work with my iPhone, but also because the screen isn’t really designed to show very much information and isn’t too useful. My guess is that the next version will be better. From what I’ve seen so far the screen is much nicer and the device is a lot thinner too.

Having said that I’ve already decided to get a Pebble smartwatch and I think that will have moved the technology forward, and also, the Pebble will work with iOS, which is a big plus for me.

Happy Birthday ZX Spectrum

The dear old Speccy is 30 today. Who could believe that! Amazing isn’t it? I think I should celebrate with some ZX Goodness today. I’ll see what I can come up with and post something more later perhaps.

Pebble looking amazing

Amazing to see that Pebble has been funded to over $3m from an initial request of just $100,000. I have to admit that it is an amazing idea and if it is as expected then it will be a major step forward for smart watches.

What’s especially interesting is the possibility of an SDK that could be used to make the Pebble do more, and possible control music software on an iPhone.

I guess it’s just a question of time to find out what people end up making with it.

Binary Clock in LiveView

Binary Clock
LiveView BinaryClock

A little bit of progress with this project. I got the binary clock app running on the device. I really need to be able to get this working with RSS feeds and more soon.

Zodiac is up and running!

I finally managed to get a charger for my Zodiac 2, and it works just fine! I’ve had a very brief try out with the onboard sound card and that too works just fine. I’m looking forward to getting it fully loaded.

New toy, new danger

I’ve always liked the idea of a PDA type watch. So much so that I actually bought one of the old Fossil PDA Palm OS watches years ago. It was something that I almost instantly regretted as wearing it was more like having a small brick on my arm.

So after that somewhat failed experiment I decided that I wouldn’t try wrist based devices anymore. That was until I saw this one, which is very small. I thought I’d take a picture of it to compare against one of the newer iPod Nanos. As you can see it is tiny.

It’s a Sony Ericsson Live View, which is supposed to connect to your Android phone/device and be able to communicate with it to show texts, twitter etc as it happens on the phone without having to constantly check your phone. Interesting idea, and as I was able to get hold of one very cheaply I thought I’d give it a go.

So far I’ve only just got it out of the box, but hopefully I’ll have it up and running soon and I’ll post some results.

3G gave up

I don’t know if you can see it but just overlapping the Apple logo is that spinning thing that tells you that it’s doing something, or in this case, doing something for about 2 days. My jailbroken 3G finally broke and I had to wipe it to get it to do anything serious at all. Will I go back to a jailbroken 3G? Maybe, I’m not sure as yet quite what I want to do with the thing.

Arduino Mega ADK

I sat on the fence about getting one of these for a while, but I eventually decided that I’d love to play with Arduino and Android and Processing all together. So expect some more semi-mobile geekery in due course.
