Blake’s 7: Liberator Chronicles 8 – Spoils

I updated my Blake’s 7 library after Christmas as Big Finish was having a sale on a range of titles. One that I bought was the Liberator Chronicles 8. As a collection of four stories it was fine. Nothing bad in there, nothing amazing. That is until the last story in the collection. The last story in this collection is called ‘Spoils’.

I’m not going to spoil the story in case you plan to listen to it, but, I have to say it was probably one of the most interesting and unusual stories in the Blake’s 7 range I’ve ever heard.

I’ll leave it there. If you do listen to it, I think you’ll be surprised.

Great to hear that Big Finish have had their licence extended

All the way out to 2025, which feels like the future anyway. Of course it means lots more great stories, and raises expectations of people like me quite a lot.

But I’m very glad to hear the news. They are almost certainly the best source for anything new in the Doctor Who and the Blake’s 7 world.

I’ve only listened up to The Liberator Chronicles 6 up to know, so I’m slowly going to get through all of these, starting with 7. When I’ve listened to it I’ll let you know the verdict.

Goodbye Gareth, you will be missed

I can’t believe that I didn’t pick up on this last week, and I also can’t believe that Gareth Thomas has died. What a shame, only 71 as well, that’s not old these days. He was brilliant as Blake in Blake’s 7, which is a great favourite of mine. I feel like the world of Blake’s 7 is much smaller as a result.

I’m also thinking that I should now re-watch the entire TV series and also re-listen to all the audiobooks. That could take quite a while, but would of course be worth it.

I also wonder what Big Finish will do now in terms of the next step for their audio series for Blake’s 7? I do hope that they continue it somehow.

So I’ve listened to this now. It was good. Short, only an hour, but good. It sort of sets out a new way for the Liberator and the crew. It’ll hopefully be the beginning for the new series coming next year.

It gave me a few surprises too, which is always nice, but what else would you expect from Big Finish right?

Looking forward to 2016 and some more excellent stories.

In advance of next year’s new stories, Big Finish have given us this, which was nice. Only a short story, just an hour, but even so it’s nice to get another Blake’s 7 story before the end of this year. So I’m looking forward to hear it soon. Very soon!

Blake’s 7 coming back in 2016

Which is of course great news. I enjoyed the last series of Blake’s 7 from Big Finish, it was good and I’m just glad that they’re bringing it back next year. Blake’s 7 will quite possibly last longer on Big Finish than it did on the BBC! That’s not a bad thing either. I think it’s in good hands with Big Finish, I think they understand the Blake universe and know both what the fans want and what works, and that’s the most important thing of all.

So I’m looking forward to seeing what they do with it in 2016, and who’s in it!

Blake’s 7: Truth and Lies … Well that was a season

I enjoyed this latest season of B7, but I’d have to say that it wasn’t the best of the lot. It was a good story arc but not the best that they’ve done in my opinion. Some of the individual stories were very good, that’s for sure but I felt the overall arc lacked something. In some ways it didn’t deliver for me.

Of course it’s very difficult to keep up a series like Blake’s 7. The quality has been pretty amazing at times. Not always, but overall the writing has been good and the performances are always to a really high standard. But the last season was just so good that it’s hard not to make comparisons.

But of course everything is apparently changing for Blake’s 7 at Big Finish, as they published this week. I don’t know what that really means, but I hope it’ll both maintain what they’ve done to date and improve it at the same time. Either way I hope there’ll be more Blake’s 7 to look forward to.
