Sylvian / Sakamoto … Bamboo Houses RSD release

This is one of the things I really wanted to get this year at RSD. I have the tracks already, in fact, I think I have multiple versions in multiple formats too, but that’s not what this is about.

The two songs are really important to me. They bring back special memories, and any opportunity to have a new version or iteration, even in just the packaging, well, I’ll take it. This edition, for Record Store Day, is rather lovely. I’ve played it once, just once. That’s enough. It’s a thing of beauty, and I’m glad to have it.

A page for today … Let’s start with ‘about’

I mentioned doing this series a while back so I thought I’d start today, with the ‘about‘ page. It is one of those pages that you are expected to have aren’t you. Mine isn’t bad really, although it always feels like it needs a bit of a spruce up whenever I look at it. In fact I’ve just removed a bunch of stuff from it as it was getting out of date, so it’s in a bit of a better state than it has been for a while now.

It’s a tricky thing an about page. In some ways it should say everything about the site / blog, but in many ways it just can’t and it’s sort of impossible to sum up everything into one static page. Anyway, it’s there, and it’s more up to date, and I’ll probably update it again at some point.

Maybe I’ll get some inspiration for it?

My Record Store Day experience

This is the third year I’ve been along to Record Store Day, and personally I think it’s a great idea and I’m a big fan of it. This year I thought I’d put down a few thoughts about the event and what I think could be better for next year.

I started off the day at Rough Trade East. I expected to queue up there and that is exactly what I had to do. Queuing from 8 am until gone 10 am is rough though, and it was cold and windy. But, finally I got in and was able to have a look for the Record Store Day exclusives I wanted to buy. Sadly only 2 of them were available. Rough Trade was a bun fight to be honest. It’s the same as it has been in previous years, but I just don’t think it’s very well organised, and I don’t like it.

After that disappointment I headed over to Berwick Street. It was approaching midday and they had a lot going on over there, so I thought I’d try out Sister Ray and see if there was any chance of getting any of the other items I’d hoped for.

Of course, the queue there was pretty long too. Not as long, but long enough. However, this was a much better managed queue. Sister Ray staff came out and handed out stock lists so people could see what the store had. They were also available to people in the queue to tell them if a given item had gone out of stock or not, which was very useful. As you got closer to the store itself we were asked to write down the items we wanted and given a ticket number. These were collected so that the items you wanted could be prepared for you by the time you got into the store.

Overall my experience at Sister Ray was far more positive than Rough Trade. Sister Ray were organised and prepared and helpful. I really appreciated that. I think that next year I’ll start there and not at Rough Trade.

A well mannered war …

Well that was yet another piece of genius. Gareth Roberts’ story was excellent. Amusing, well paced, and entertaining. It had a superb ending which I won’t spoil for you, and a great cast. I enjoyed every minute.

I’m just hoping that Big Finish can put out some more material like this. I’m sure it can’t be easy as the standard is so high, but I think it would be wonderful if they put out more novel adaptations. What I’ve heard so far is amazing.

Disappointing … Corpse Marker

I had really high hopes for this story, but sadly it has been a massive disappointment. It felt confused and overly complicated and in many ways somehow detached from the main characters of the Doctor and Leela, almost as if they had changed significantly since the original story. It lacked a sense of humour and any warmth to it.

I found myself really not caring about what happened, and in an 8 hour story that’s not good. I did finish listening to it, but I can’t in anyway recommend it sadly.

Can’t help but notice all the Apple Watch apps

It seems that every app update now has something to do with the Apple Watch. There are going to be so many apps that extend to it soon.

It makes me start to wonder about my decision to go for a pebble time. Of course it’s too late to go back on that but it is nagging at me. I still think that the Apple Watch is too fat and I’m sure that within a couple of years there’ll be one much better and much thinner too. My money is on it being called the Apple Watch Air! Who knows.
