Platforms

I’ve been thinking about putting a couple of other projects onto platforms I’ve never tried before. I use WordPress for this blog, and blogger for other stuff, but I’ve never tried things like hubpages or Devhub before and was wondering about trying them out for stuff.

It seems to me though that you can end up with a really scatter gun approach to your content on the web, which isn’t really very useful at all. And do some of these platforms actually work at all for your content? They make lots of claims about you getting money for your content and that sort of thing, but I remain skeptical about them.

Perhaps I need to move on and actually try them out first.

Freelance Sites

I’ve been looking at sites like elance and Vworker and oDesk and others to get my head around what sorts of thing they offer and whether it is really worth getting into using sites like thes for work.

If anyone reading this has any experience of them please let me know.

Messing around with Processing

I’ve been messing around with Processing JS for a few days as it seems to be easier to put .js sketches into a web site than standard Processing sketches, and it is. But, whilst it makes a lot of sense to use processing.js with WordPress, sadly processing.js isn’t so good at audio, and a lot of my processing stuff is audio related.

So I’m going back to straight Processing for now as I know I can get the audio librarys to work with that.

Never mind

Harry Potter

So I went to see the new Harry Potter film today. If you haven’t seen the film then you should probably just stop reading this right now in case I give anything away.

I’ve seen all the potter films so far and I’ve listened to all the books as audio books, and I read the last one as well. Having said all of that, I can’t say I’m a big fan. I only read the last book because I wanted to know what happens in the end, and I didn’t want to have to wait for the film(s) to come out. Of course when I read the book I expected there to be one film at the end and not two.

One can’t help feeling a little cynical that the last book has been made into 2 films. Especially given that the potter franchise has pretty much kept Warner Brothers alive for the past few years. I do wonder what they’ll do without it? I guess they’ll sell us huge box sets of potter DVDs with pointless extras.

Anyway, having read the book I knew what to expect from the film, or at least this half. Or so I thought anyway. When I read the book I think that there was around 200 pages in it that just did nothing for the plot or the characters and seemed to have no purpose whatsoever. I’m all for dramatic pauses but this was more like a dramatic gap year.

I thought that the film would get rid of some of that empty space from the book, but I was surprised to find lots of long shots of the main 3 characters looking into the distant and the like. I can’t say it did much for me at all.

I’ll almost certainly go to the 2nd part in July or whenever, but I’m already expecting it to be a bit of a let down sadly.

Dr Who: Demon Quest

I finished listening to part 3 of this story today. The remaining parts still haven’t been released. Another 2 are due.

Demon Quest is the second new story that Tom Baker has recorded. The first one, Hornet’s Nest was really good and I enjoyed it a lot, but this one hasn’t grabbed me as much, or that is it hadn’t until today. I think that part 3 was much better than the 1st 2 parts of the story, so I’m hopeful that the next and final 2 parts will be good too. They’re released on the 2nd of December, so it isn’t long to wait.

In the meantime I’m going to listen to Alexei Sayle’s ‘Stalin Ate My Homework’, which should be fun.

Danse Society, KTP and Obscurity

I was listening to the Danse Society today. Their greatest hits or something like that. I only bought the CD for 1 track which I really liked and was unable to find anywhere as a single track download.

This got me thinking about other obscure music I’ve been hunting of late. I recently got back into Kissing the Pink, who’s later albums are very hard to get hold of except on vinyl, and whilst I do like vinyl I don’t find it practical on a day to day basis.

Every time I hunt down something obscure that I’ve remembered and decide that I really must get again I think that this will be the last bit of obscurity I need to locate, but in fact it turns out that it reminds me of another 2 or 3 tracks or albums that I’d love to hear again that don’t seem to be available anywhere on this planet.

I’m sure I’m not the only one though, and I guess it keeps things interesting.

Sorry if this doesn’t make sense, it is late and I think I’m rambling. I’ll stop now.

The Last of the Current Series: Sarah Jane Adventures

It was the last episode in the current series tonight and it was brilliant!

I really think that this show has been one of the best children’s shows in a long time, and in many ways it is better than Dr Who, certainly better than many of the David Tenant series, Matt Smith has been a big improvement in my book.

But The Sarah Jane Adventures has always delivered as far as I’m concerned, and not just for children. Each story has been well thought through and superbly executed. For a spin off series it has done really well and I’m looking forward to the next series in 2011.

More SJA! Keep up the good work BBC!

Listening to Small Craft on a Milk Sea

I was listening to this album for the first time today and it wasn’t what I was expecting really. That’s not to say that I didn’t enjoy it, I did, but I guess I thought I was going to get something a little bit more like Another Day on Earth which I really loved, or maybe like Everything that Happens will Happen today.

Anyway. I’ve still enjoyed it a lot, but I think I need to listen to it some more. In fact, a lot more.
