Palm OS apps I never finished: bleepLAB

This was almost certainly a way too ambitious project when I started it, and even now I’m not entirely sure what my intention was. As you can see from the pictures I seem to have spent more time developing the nice little dialogues for the app than the app itself, but I think that says a lot about my motivations.

Who knows, maybe I’ll give it a second try at some point. Maybe…

Sinewave / Bacterium

I didn’t make either of these, although I think that I may have compiled them under HB++, a now defunct IDE for Palm OS development.

The Sinewave app was from Olivier and was meant as a learning aid for those wishing to develop Palm OS audio apps.

Bacterium was something that was being developed (I can’t remember by whom) and, as often happens, got stalled. Both late examples of Palm OS music making apps.

Finding old Palm OS apps I’d started to make

In reviving the Tungsten C I discovered an SD card that I must have forgotten about. It had a load of test builds of Palm OS apps that I started years ago and never finished, but it’s interesting to go back and look at them. A few are even partially functional too.

What I love to see is the icons I made for them. My favourite being tDrum2, sQeeQ, and SliderOn in the picture above. Of these only one actually works, but I’ll take more pictures of the apps and show you what I mean. More soon.

Getting the Tungsten C up and running

I remembered that I still had an old Palm Tungsten C which I’d bought from a friend ages ago, and I thought I’d see if it still worked. Of course it did, with one caveat, but I’ll come back to that.

The Tungsten C was an interesting device, with a full keyboard and large screen it is a very easy to use device, and it supports WIFI and bluetooth. However, the WIFI doesn’t support WPA security which makes it kind of useless now. However, it is still on the face of it a very handy device. That is until I decided to see if I could run linux on it, and then as you can see from the picture with the stripey lines, it didn’t really like it.

It restored ok, and seems to be working fine now. All I need to do is to work out what to do with it next!

I hate it when something is lost

I’ve been trying to find the registration code for an old Palm application that I’d like to put into my StyleTap emulator on my old 3G. The company that made the software are long gone, and so far I can’t locate the registration details from anywhere.

It looks like I’ll have to give up on it for now at the very least, but it is really annoying!

There’s a Microbe in my 3G

Now I’ve got the excellent Microbe running under StyleTap on my old iPhone 3G. Of course, the original version of Microbe was built to run on a much less powerful device, so in theory it should do quite well. Next I need to get the big one up and running.

Bhajis Loops.

Finding software for older platforms

The recent update to Pixilang made me try to find a decent text editor for my Axim Windows Mobile device, which wasn’t that easy. In fact, I found that there were only about 3 text editors that were even workable for my device. It made me realise that it isn’t easy to find software for aged software platforms, especially not terribly popular ones.

When I was looking for Einstein (the Newton emulator for Android) I realised that the Newton was very well supported, but that’s not true of everything in the older mobile world. So it got me thinking about setting up a site/store/repository for this stuff. Sounds like loads of work though! Maybe someone else will do it.

Running iziBasic and ViziBasic under StyleTap

So today is my last day of using the StyleTap trial. I knew that I’d have to get the last bit of testing done today to see if I could use iziBasic and ViziBasic on the emulator. The short answer? You can. In fact, in some ways they work better, especially in terms of being able to zoom the screen, which is very handy when you’re not using a stylus.

So I ran a ‘generate code and compile’, from Vizibasic, and that worked fine, and a compile from iziBasic and that worked too. All systems go then. Looks like I’ll be buying StyleTap after all!

StyleTap successes and failures

8 days left of my trial period on StyleTap. Some things are working well, some not. I’ve had troubles getting some files into StyleTap has been problematic, or impossible in some cases. There appears to be some kind of maximum file size for getting files in which I haven’t worked out a way around as yet, and I’ve only got 7 days left to do it.

Also I’m still having problems with user names, as it seems that this is kind of important in getting some older apps to work. Still, more apps to load and more things to try out.

One useful bit of information I found was a list of apps which specifically work with StyleTap.
