Another visit to the Oramics Exhibition

I got to make another visit to the Science Museum to see the Oramics exhibition, which has grown considerably now. I love some of the new exhibits like the Fairlight and the WASP synth, and of course the ATARI 520 ST.

I must try and find Daphne Oram’s book soon. I hope to get to see the exhibition again before it closes, and I hope they add a few more bits and pieces too. Hope you like the pictures.

A new Sylvian retrospective in Feb

A new Sylvian album. Well, a compilation. A retrospective actually. I looked at the track listing. I’ve got them all except one. So the question is, do I buy it just for the sake of a single song? The answer? Probably.

Tron Legacy

I’ve watched the film a couple of times and it’s ok. But the soundtrack really is quite excellent and listening to it on and off for the last week or so I’ve got really quite into it. So much so that I think I might have to see the film again.

Another lovely find

It’s only a small thing. A serial to MIDI adapter made by miniMusic for connecting Palm devices to MIDI. I’d almost forgotten I had this, then it turned up yesterday. How wonderful

The Unknown Public

I found all my copies of the Unknown Public today. I’d forgotten about them for the most part, so I may decide to re-listen to the entire collection from January.

I wish that the Unknown Public hadn’t finished. It was such a good idea. It was meant to be a quarterly publication about new music. I don’t think it ever managed to be quarterly. At best you might see 2 a year published. It started in the 1990’s and is long gone now although the website still exists. As far as I can see it hasn’t been updated in a long time now, but never mind. The editions I have are still lovely.

Flumina

I’ve been listening to Flumina by Sakamoto Fennesz for a couple of weeks now, or maybe a bit less. I really love how peaceful this album is. How restful. I love the music that Fennesz and Sakamoto make. It’s a great combination and each new release has it’s own nuance.

Dolby Disappointment

I caved in and bought Thomas Dolby’s latest album, ‘A Map of the Floating City’. I’d been considering it for a while as the last gig of his I went to was a real disappointment. So I listened to the new album today, and I have to say that it too was a big disappointment. There were a couple of not bad tracks, but on the whole I thought it was poor.

What a shame.

The Wire 2011 Rewind

Every year I wait for the Wire’s review of albums and see how many I have managed to pick up over the year. Some year’s I do not so bad, but this year I’ve done really badly. Never mind. Time to start to listen to a few of these albums I think.

Spotify and the arrival of the SPAPP

Last Sunday I went along to music hack day and a lot of the hacks used spotify’s new app platform. More of what I think about platforms another time.

I was a spotify user a while back but just ended up not using it anymore over a year ago. So I decided to fire up the service again to see if I was missing out on anything.

Perhaps I just didn’t give it a good enough chance but it did feel like I had no use for it. Maybe I’m not the target audience or maybe I need to upgrade to get the most out of it. Whatever it is I’m not finding it useful so far.

I like the idea of it and I thought some of the SPAPPs were kind of cool, but perhaps it needs a bit of time to mature.
