Support for Lizzie Emeh at the AlbanyLizzie Emeh at the Albany
This was a truly lovely gig last night at the Albany, which is, in my opinion, a great venue. Lizzie was awesome, and the support (who’s name I sadly didn’t catch) was totally amazing. The clicking song was out of this world!
I am just so glad that I went along, and I’m so glad to be a part of Heart n Soul.
Whilst this type of band / music isn’t my usual cup of tea, I have to say it was a great show, and, whilst I probably wouldn’t run out and buy a CD of the music, I did enjoy it.
This was a must for me at Edinburgh this year. Of course, with a show like this you never quite know what you’re going to get before you get there. It’s a gamble, like most of the Fringe, but even more so when you’re a big fan of something like The Blues Brothers.
But it was very good. Very good indeed. They did all the major songs and more. The routines were very good, Jake was especially convincing and all in all it was a good gig.
I think I should go to a few more Blues Brothers tribute bands.
Moog Soundlab residency: Dave Colohan – The Modular
This was a lovely little event, and when I say little I really do mean it. The audience was tiny in a tiny little basement bar at the Ace hotel in Shoreditch. It’s a nice venue though. The performance lasted a hour and was very interesting and used a lot but not all the equipment.
More modular stuff
I find it interesting to watch a modular performance like this to see how the music is actually generated and sustained. It isn’t like normal performances at all of course. Quite different indeed.

The arrangements were lovely, with people’s names on their booked seats.

And on each seat was a thing called a “dream machine”, which was a strange light contraption sitting on a turntable. It made an interesting effect though.

So it was an enjoyable evening, good fun, interesting to watch and different environment too.
I love going to the Jazz Cafe, it’s a great venue and very convenient too, except when there’s a tube strike and I have to walk there from Borough Market, which took a lot longer than normal simply due to the crowds in London. Anyway, that’s my rant over with for now anyway.
Melle Mel and the Furious Five at the Jazz Cafe
I went to this gig with a couple of mates who were, to be fair, more interested in it than I was. However, I do tend to go along because it’s always good to see friends, and you never know if you’ll see something amazing or not. Luckily for me, this was the later.
It was a great gig. Lots of tracks I remember in the set, and a huge amount of energy in the performance. The audience loved it and it was a great evening. So I’m really glad I went.
A great performance from Blancmange at the Red Gallery in Shoreditch. Really enjoyed it. They played a range of stuff from Semi-Detached to Irene and Mavis. Long may they continue. I’ll keep going anyway.
I’ve been enjoying listening to their new album today on Spotify as it was only released today, and so I popped along to Rough Trade East to see them tonight at Rough Trade East. I’m always impressed with the sound there. It’s a nice little venue for small gigs, and I’ve to a few there already this year.
However, what I’m really looking forward to at Rough Trade next is Record Store day! More about that later.
I really them as the Portico Quartet too. In fact I saw them live a couple of times, first at WOMAD a few years ago and then at the Roundhouse too. The WOMAD gig was actually amazing. They played for an hour in the big red tent and I thought the sound was incredible. I’d never really heard them before, but after WOMAD I was hooked. So I went along to see them at the Roundhouse, and sadly was a bit disappointed by that performance.
So when I heard that they were playing over at Rough Trade East and had a new album coming out I was intrigued. Also, it seems that they’re no longer the Portico Quartet, but now just Portico. I’ve been listening to their new tracks on Spotify for a while and I’m getting quite into them. It’s different from the old sound although I think that there are traces of it there, but I do like it.
So I’m going along tomorrow to see what it’s like and grab a copy of the album too. I’ll post some thoughts and pictures if I get any good ones.
I went to see this group the other week and really enjoyed their musical styles. This was the first time I’d seen the group although I have seen / heard similar styles like this before. It was good, fun and they certainly are very talented indeed.
