Daphne Oram – Private Dreams and Public Nightmares

I think that this is one of the most interesting and mesmerizing albums I’ve listened to in ages. Inspiring and difficult at the same time. It’s great to listen to while working, but also strangely distracting at times.

I’m tentative about recommending it as I know it won’t appeal to many people, but it will appeal to some, who’ll love it.

Waiting for Romo

Romo’s seem to be arriving all over the place, although mainly in the US of course. I’m still waiting for mine and for the updated app to get into the iOS app store. I’m really looking forward to seeing mine and getting a chance to play with it.

To MIDIfy a VL-1

So, having got my VL-1 and located my VL-1 MIDI kit, I suddenly realise that I don’t have any instructions to go with it!

I’ve asked highly-liquid for some help as they made the kit.

Solar Theremin

I decided to build this kit after having it for ages and ages. So I made the whole thing and put it all together and it doesn’t work. I’ve checked every connection, and I can’t find anything wrong with it at all. Except that it doesn’t work. Which is a real shame.

I actually thought I did a really good job of soldering it, which makes it a little worse in a way. Anyway, I think I’ll leave it for a while and go back to it to see if I can work out what’s wrong with it.

Arduino experiments restart

Finally I got back to my Arduino this weekend. It took a while to get it going again, but finally it is. My real aim is to get Android and Arduino working together and I’d found a site that explains how to do it. However, once I was quite a way through I realised that it required an Arduino Mega ADK and not the older model I had.

So now I’m wondering about getting an ADK model for £60 to continue this project. Perhaps a more sensible thing would be to get some stuff done with what I’ve got first and see where I get to with that before moving on.

Not sure.

This is not really very good at all

As I was getting hold of PDAs at the weekend I remembered that I had this Stylophone Beatbox. So I put some batteries in it and got it working again.

I shouldn’t have bothered. It really wasn’t worth it at all. The sounds are awful and it’s really hard to get it to do anything very musical.

I think it’s something I need to bend

Next project

This is another kit I’ve had for ages and haven’t gotten around to, so it’s next on my list of things to make.

It’s a solar theremin kit, we’ll see how this one goes at the weekend.

Making a Lumiphone

One of the things I wanted to do a lot more of this year was make stuff, kits, gadgets, whatever, and I’ve got started at last. I made my lumiphone kit. I soldered it all up and it works!

So far so good, I’ll be moving on to my next project in a week.

Thingamagoop and the Monotrons

That would be a good name for a band wouldn’t it? Anyway, I plugged my Thingamagoop 2 into my original Monotron aux and that into my new Monotron Delay. How much more fun can you have?

Anyway, I’ve recorded the noises and I’m going to do some manipulating with them, so you can expect the end result up on SoundCloud soon enough.
