Survivors series two is coming next week

I’m really looking forward to this. It’s been a long time coming. Well a year to be precise. I think I’ve listened to the first series a couple of times since it came out, but I’m hoping to get to listen to the whole of it again before series 2 emerges next week, just so I’ve got the story clear in my memory.

It maybe overkill a little, but I don’t mind that kind of thing really.

Big Finish have they’re Doctor Who licence extended to 2020

Which is excellent news from a selfish perspective in the main. I’m just really pleased to know that they’re going to continue to make excellent stories for Doctor Who. I think that they probably make the best stories around right now and I’d really like that to continue.

Big Finish: Survivors the series

I’ve been listening to this again. It’s interesting to hear it after watching the original series and of course the BBC remake as well. The big finish series is a different story altogether. The same ideas but different characters telling a different side to the story. It merges into the original about halfway through the set of audio books. Of course the production values are very high as you’d expect from Big Finish.

It’s interesting to get all these different perspectives on the story. The original TV series. The new TV series (comparatively new anyway), the Big Finish series, and also their unabridged version of the novel itself.

I’m looking forward to hearing the next season of the Big Finish full cast drama when it’s available, in June I think.

When I’ve finished listening to everything that I’ve got so far, and possibly even re-watching the newer TV series I might do a post about the whole lot in one go, and cover what I think of each treatment.

Big Finish: Doctor Who, The Ultimate Adventure

This is one of the few Doctor Who stage plays, and is the only one that I ever went to. It was back in 1989 and I’ve occasionally thought about it over the years, but when I realised that I’d inadvertently bought a copy of Big Finish’s audiobook version it all came back to me.

Listening to it for the first time brought back a lot of memories, but the most interesting thing was hearing about how the production came about and the problems that it faced. It was really interesting to find out all about how it came about and what eventually happened to the production.

Whilst it is most certainly not one of the best Doctor Who stories of all time, even though it is strangely named the ‘Ultimate’ adventure! Although I guess that’s more to do with it being produced in the 80’s more than anything else. It is part of Doctor Who history, and I guess I’m one of the few (ok, probably there would have been over 10,000 people who saw it, but against the scale of Doctor Who fans that’s small) who saw it.

Anyway, I got in touch with the two people who I went with and they both remembered it, and one even still had the theatre programme! So here it is …

Dark Eyes 2

I really enjoyed this. As I listened to it I had no idea where it was going or what was going to happen, and I really like that in a story. I did guess the end of the story about 30 minutes before the end. Even so, it was an awesome story over almost 4 hours. Evey minute worthwhile.

I think it’s been left open for a Dark Eyes 3. Perhaps we’ll need to wait another couple of years for that though.

Shackleton

I remember watching this when it first came out. It was a superb production and Kenneth Branagh has excellent in the lead role. Watching it again makes me realise what a truly inspiring story it is. So much so that I can imagine myself watching this a third or even a fourth time.

Anyway, if you haven’t seen this I can strongly recommend it.

Doctor Who: Zagreus

So I finished listening to this today, all 3 CDs. The cast was amazing. It looked like Big Finish had basically got everyone together who’d been in Doctor Who and got them into a single story (with a few exceptions). But the story wasn’t that good in my opinion. It was ok, and would have worked for a smaller cast, but I think there were almost too many people in Zagreus.

Still, I enjoyed it and it moves me on to listen to the next story.

The Brothers Grimm

As there was a total lack of anything decent to watch on TV tonight I decided to watch the brothers Grimm which I hadn’t seen in ages, and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was.

It reminds me of story telling festivals where you here tales that are adapted and altered and made funnier in a kind of up to date way. I think Gilliam’s a great story teller and this film was a little under-rated in my opinion.

Good to see it again. I think I’ll have to mine my collection for less watched gems again.

Tall Tales from Beyond the Border

I was at the Beyond the Border International Storytelling Festival recently, which was great as it I had seriously thought it would never run again. The festival has had a few years off due to funding woes and for most festivals that normally means that they won’t be seen again. Not so for Beyond the Border. This year they were back just like there had been no break at all and I was very happy to be there.

It was a superb festival with lots of amazing music and stories from all over the world. Whenever I get to events like this I’m amazed at how riveting storytelling can be. How just listening to one person telling a story can captivate your imagination.

I’m so impressed at the immense cultural heritage that’s gathered in one place. It also reminds me of how easy it is to forget our own cultural heritage, and how in large cities we can forget our stories.

Stories are important, they help us to understand where we are in the world and make sense of things. Living in cities can disconnect us from our stories, and being at an event like Beyond the Border helps reestablish that connection, helps us remember our own stories and reminds us to continue to tell them.

It feels good that Beyond the Border is back. It should be on again in 2012, and I hope I’ll be there.
