First impressions: Eno / Hyde – Someday World

eno-hyde-someday

I suppose I didn’t know what to expect when I listened to this. I like Eno’s work and his last few albums have been very good and well worth listening to. So when Someday World started to play I wondered why I was listening to what sounded like a load of 1980’s synth brass.

However, after the first few minutes it became obvious that this was going to be a very good album with some great tracks on it. I’ve only listened once, but that once through was very enjoyable indeed.

Definitely time for another listen, or two, or three …

Fennesz – Bécs

EMEGO165

I have been looking forward to this for a while. A new Fennesz album is something to be enjoyed slowly. I’ve barely listened to it once so far and already I can say that it has great range. There’s some deeply moving material in there and I’ve enjoyed the album. Perhaps not as much as Black Sea, which is a personal favourite, but it’s early so far and I need to let this album settle and get used to it.

One thing that it reminds me, is that listening takes time, requires depth, concentration and perseverance. It doesn’t come quickly, but the wait, the effort, is always worth it. Especially with Fennesz.

Record Store Day Release of Metamatic

Amended Metamatic pak

One of the things I picked up from Record Store Day last weekend was this special release of John Foxx’s first album Metamatic on white vinyl. I’ve had this album for ages but I couldn’t resist getting this version.

Record Store Day 2014

Just some pictures from what was a very cold queue for Rough Trade East on Saturday morning. I think I queued up for just over 2 hours in the end, and I managed to get two of the three special releases I was after.

What I’ve been listening to in February

February was an interesting month for musical discovery. I ‘found’ some really good stuff, so I thought I’d post a round up of what I enjoyed in February. I might even keep doing it every month. Who knows.

Morning Phase by Beck: I really enjoyed this album. I only recently decided to listen to some Beck again and just listened to a bunch of albums culminating in this one which was excellect.

Sea Change by Beck: I listened to this before Morning Phase, and now that I think back I’m not sure which I prefer. Perhaps I’ll need to listen to them side by side.

The Eurythmics, Boxed: Whilst I haven’t actually finished listening to this as yet I do like a good boxed set to listen to and this one reminded me of a lot of their great tracks that I’d forgotten.

The Civil Wars: Not something I would normally listen to, but I quite enjoyed listening to an album or two of their material. I don’t think I’d go back to it in a hurry, but it was nice.

Stereolab: I’ve listened to a lot of them in Feb. Not entirely sure why, and they’re one of those acts that I enjoy but then can’t really remember what it is I’ve been listening to afterwards. Perhaps that’s ok.

Those are the highlights that spring to mind at the moment, and that probably means they’re the things I enjoyed the most. Maybe.
