Music apps I haven’t used in ages: Future Sound

This was an app I got right back at the start of iOS music making. In fact, before it was iOS actually. It was one of the more innovative apps that came out, and more like art than a music making experience. It’s interesting to go back to it now as in many ways some of these ideas have been taken on by the likes of RJDJ in the work they’ve done with their Inception app and also with scenes in general.

I looked up their website and they’re still going, although it seems as though the iOS or mobile world isn’t the entirety of what they’re about, which is good. Interesting to see what they do next, although they don’t seem to have a blog or news feed sadly.

Messing about with Jasuto Pro

Messing around with stuff is great fun, and if there’s an iOS app that is superb fun, then it’s Jasuto Pro Modular. I haven’t played with this app for ages, and so it’s great to get back into it and discover stuff that I’d started but not done anything with.

The patch, or sketch, or whatever the proper name is, that you can see above uses a sample file that was recorded using RJDJ on a journey home one day. The idea was to record a week of travel sounds using RJDJ and then create patches for it in apps like Jasuto Pro.

I must work out how to get the audio out on this track, but perhaps on another day.

Einstein running on Android. So far I haven’t been able to do much with it as it’s so slow, but I’ll keep at it and see how I get on with it.

Tasker makes Android completely awesome

I’ve been messing around with Tasker for a few days now, and I have to say that it is one very good reason to move completely to Android. Tasker is so flexible and modular that it can do pretty much anything in terms of automating an Android device.

If there was a Tasker like app for iOS it would be a massive seller, but of course it doesn’t fit with the whole sandbox approach from Apple. Big big shame.

I found myself seriously considering a move to Android away from the iPhone on my next contract renewal, and if Apple don’t pull something stupendous out of the bag with the iPhone 5 I might just do it.

I’ll post some of my Tasker automations soon too, then you’ll see what I mean.

Einstein on Android

I only discovered today that there’s a relatively stable port of Einstein the Newton emulator, available for Android 2.2, so I’m going to try and get it running on my newly rooted San Francisco which could be very cool indeed!

RJC1000 doesn’t work on Lion

That’s pretty much all I can say about that really. I was thinking about making my own scenes and remembered RJDJ’s RJC1000 application for the mac. I’d tinkered around with it before but not to any serious degree, so I thought I’d give it a try again, but it won’t load properly in Lion, so I may have to try running it on Leopard on my old mac mini.

Not ideal, but I can’t see RJDJ updating it any time soon as they’re too busy with loads of other stuff. Not that I’m complaining you understand.

Android progress

Well, having lost the use of my iPad for now I thought I’d try and get my 1 year old Android device running again. A couple of days ago it looked like this device had failed completely, but this morning it seemed like it was working ok, at least for now anyway. It installed loads of updates, and I seem to have access to get to the apps on it now too, which is great for testing on the 3G with Android 2.3 installed.

Messing about with Oramics

Having seen the Oramics exhibition again I thought I’d spend some time with the Oramics app again as I haven’t used it in ages. I think that the first time I used it I didn’t really get the hang of it, but playing with it this morning I really enjoyed it. I think I might record some pieces from it too.

StyleTap successes and failures

8 days left of my trial period on StyleTap. Some things are working well, some not. I’ve had troubles getting some files into StyleTap has been problematic, or impossible in some cases. There appears to be some kind of maximum file size for getting files in which I haven’t worked out a way around as yet, and I’ve only got 7 days left to do it.

Also I’m still having problems with user names, as it seems that this is kind of important in getting some older apps to work. Still, more apps to load and more things to try out.

One useful bit of information I found was a list of apps which specifically work with StyleTap.

And the Android dies …

I’ve been trying to retrieve Android .APK application files from my old Android phone to try and install them into the Android 2.3 OS version living on my 3G. I should have guessed that today would be the day that this old (well about 1 year old) Android phone would choose to fail. That makes perfect sense.

So I’ve ordered a new Android phone for two reasons. Firstly so I can try out some of the stuff I’ve been meaning to using Android, and secondly to get some of these files into the hacked 3G to see what happens and if they’ll even run.
