Well, having lost the use of my iPad for now I thought I’d try and get my 1 year old Android device running again. A couple of days ago it looked like this device had failed completely, but this morning it seemed like it was working ok, at least for now anyway. It installed loads of updates, and I seem to have access to get to the apps on it now too, which is great for testing on the 3G with Android 2.3 installed.

Google’s mobile operating system and the stuff I do or try to do with it. A lot of the time it’ll be either music or automation related.
And the Android dies …
I’ve been trying to retrieve Android .APK application files from my old Android phone to try and install them into the Android 2.3 OS version living on my 3G. I should have guessed that today would be the day that this old (well about 1 year old) Android phone would choose to fail. That makes perfect sense.
So I’ve ordered a new Android phone for two reasons. Firstly so I can try out some of the stuff I’ve been meaning to using Android, and secondly to get some of these files into the hacked 3G to see what happens and if they’ll even run.
The trouble with Android
I keep thinking about getting a decent Android device, but I never quite get around to it. The main reason being the enormous differences in devices and costs. In some ways I think the whole iOS device scene has it easy. There really isn’t much to choose from and you know what will work on what device.
But in Android land it is very different indeed. Not only are there far more screen sizes, but you have to worry about which kind of device will get an update to which next version of the Android OS. It’s confusing, and that’s not good when you’re spending a few hundred pounds on something.
Sometimes I wonder if I should bother. Maybe I should stick to iOS, but I keep coming back to Android on a regular basis, so maybe I should give it another look. It just feels like it’s going to cost money and by a let down though.
Android on my 3G and emulation
I was thinking about getting Android going on my old 3G and even running StyleTap the palm OS emulator for jailbroken iPhones. Then I realised that I’d done exactly the same thing this time last year and had tried all of the above.
So maybe I shouldn’t bother trying it all over again. But then again maybe I will.
Processing again
It really is time that I got back to actual making of things, be they physical or digital. Going back to processing has a nice feel to it. I like to make stuff, and processing is easy, or at least a lot easier than other languages I’ve tried.
I’ve got a few new ideas I want to try out and a lot of old sketches that never got finished or that don’t work anymore for one reason or another. I also want to dabble with processing for Android and see what I can do with that. I did get a few small sketches running on my underpowered Android phone, but I want to see if I can do anything musical with it.
I’ll post them again when I’ve got something done.
Trouble with Android Processing
Over the weekend I’ve been trying to get my installation of Processing for Android up to date to start getting a few things built. Sounds simple enough right? Wrong! It has been taking me ages to get this stuff to work. I’ve no idea why either.
I was hoping to actually get things working on Saturday so I could spend some time trying out some ideas on Sunday. No chance though.
Tinkering with App Inventor (again)
Spent a bit more time with Android app inventor recently. It is such a simple and straightforward way of constructing stuff for Android devices. But it also serves as a great reminder that if you don’t flex your programming skills (however meager they may be) once in a while you will find them almost non-existent when you try to use them again.
Hmm, point taken!
New version of Processing for Android
It is a few days old now but I’ve just downloaded the latest version of Processing for Android. I’m hoping it’ll fix some of the issues I’ve had with using older sketches on my Android device.
The big thing I’m waiting for from Processing for Android is the app build itself, and I don’t think that is in this release.
Learning more about Android
Whilst this post isn’t about NanoLoop it is about how things are different between iOS and Android.
I’m starting to get better at that, and better at understanding the way Android works. The guide book I bought the other day has help to turn the corner a little, and I’m starting to see some ways I can make better use of what Android has to offer.
Getting Serious about Android (at last)
I bought this a couple of weeks ago with the intention of getting more serious about doing stuff with my Android device, or rather devices as I seem to have 2 now. I’m going to give it a proper go and see if I can’t do something meaningful with these very soon.
I guess I haven’t really explored the possibilities of Android properly and I should sort that out.
So hopefully over the next few weeks I’ll be posting on how I’m using Android more successfully, and not just for music related things either.
