Trying out the Processing app for Android

Having started to play with Processing on iOS, albeit with lots of limitations, I thought I’d see if there was a similar app for Android. There is. However, the Android processing app didn’t seem to be as smooth an experience as the iOS version.

Having said that, my Android device is much slower than my iPhone, so I might be doing the app an disservice. Even so, when I’ve put sketches on the same device from Processing on the desktop it performs very well indeed. Anyway, the long and the short of it is that I gave up on that app fairly quickly.

Getting apps into iDroid (2)

This wasn’t something I thought would run under iDroid. It is a very simple app. All that happens is some balls float around the screen. The significant thing is that I made it in Processing, so I didn’t think it would work at all on the emulated version of iDroid, but it did!

Getting apps into iDroid (1)

Well it isn’t all plain sailing with iDroid of course, I’ve had quite a few problems getting things to load in it, although some things are just fine.

The one app I really wanted to get running on iDroid was Tasker, which is one of the most excellent Android apps ever in my book. However, I just get this:

Which is of course no fun at all. I may do some research on this, but my guess is that this isn’t going to be readily fixable.

I just don’t seem to be buying apps right now!

Bizarre as it might seem I don’t think I’ve bought an app for ages now. It does feel very odd, but I haven’t bought one all year I think. I haven’t even downloaded very many free iOS apps either. On Android it is slightly different, but I think my purchases may total just 2 or 3 so far. Even so, it’s nothing at the moment. Not compared to what my app consumption was.

iDroid on my 3G, a bit of an update

So I’ve actually got an Android app running on my 3G under iDroid, and it actually works. It doesn’t work very well, but it does work. The app I managed to get running was Beat Dialer. The other app I tried to get to work was Tasker, but for reasons that I just don’t understand it will not install at all. Which is a shame really.

Is it worth me building my own local App Inventor?

Yesterday or late last night at any rate Google announced that they were releasing the code for their Android App Inventor product. You can download it here. Now I’m considering whether I should attempt to compile and run it locally myself.

It sounds like a kind of cool project to try out, but almost certainly one that will cause lots of problems for me. I’ll let you know if I can make it work, or even if I try.

G1 is go!

Well I’ve finally got my G1 up and running again. It’s taken a while to get this far, and it’s really just the beginning as it’s currently running Android 1.5 and I’d like to see how far I can take it. Hopefully up to 2.1, but we’ll see.

I have to say that T-Mobile were really helpful getting things working for me. They were brilliant. My plan is to get it working as a remote security scanner. We’ll see if I can make it work effectively.
