Is it worth me building my own local App Inventor?

Yesterday or late last night at any rate Google announced that they were releasing the code for their Android App Inventor product. You can download it here. Now I’m considering whether I should attempt to compile and run it locally myself.

It sounds like a kind of cool project to try out, but almost certainly one that will cause lots of problems for me. I’ll let you know if I can make it work, or even if I try.

G1 is go!

Well I’ve finally got my G1 up and running again. It’s taken a while to get this far, and it’s really just the beginning as it’s currently running Android 1.5 and I’d like to see how far I can take it. Hopefully up to 2.1, but we’ll see.

I have to say that T-Mobile were really helpful getting things working for me. They were brilliant. My plan is to get it working as a remote security scanner. We’ll see if I can make it work effectively.

Milkytracker is on Android now!

Who knew? Not me that’s for sure anyway! And, what’s more, it appears to be compatible with my old Orange San Francisco. Excellent. I shall download that and then maybe not really use it for a while then dramatically rediscover it in a few months.

Sounds like a plan doesn’t it?

Inception (the app this time)

I’ve been using this off and on over the last few days and I think I’m actually enjoying it more than I did when it first came out. I’d deleted it off my iPhone so I’d lost all the ‘dreams’ that I’d unlocked, but that doesn’t really matter.

I really love the whole augmented audio concept, and couple with the fact that I really love Inception the movie, the app is a natural fit.

Haven’t got on so well with their Dimensions app so far though. Perhaps I should give it another try.

Back to Reaktor

I decided that I really should get better acquainted with Reaktor. I’ve had the software for ages, and aside from a little tinkering with it I’ve done very little. So I’ve started at the beginning again and decided to work through the tutorials before I dive in to make anything for myself.

Happily it all came flooding back to me when I got to it, and I was able to get going very quickly. One thing that surprises me though is that there seems to be no book about Reaktor. You can find books on almost all other major music applications, but none on Reaktor that I can find anyway.

Not that I’m planning to write one you understand.

What can you do with an old PDA?

I still have a number of old devices which are for the most part doing nothing whatsoever. So I started to wonder what I could do with them. Especially my Dell Axim x51. It’s a nice device, but I really don’t use it for music anymore, nor do I really use it for anything. It seems a shame to just sell it off as I’m sure I’d regret it. I’d like it to have a reasonable use for it.

So I’m going to have a nose around and see if there’s a way to get some more life out of it.

Trying out Artisteer

I’ve been meaning to get a better template for this blog, but I don’t really want to get my head deep into WordPress theme making, so I thought I’d try out Artisteer, and it isn’t half bad you know. Really quite straightforward for making WordPress themes and it does more beside, although I’m not entire sure I’ll use much more of the functionality.

So if you see a new look here in the next week or two, you’ll know how I did it.

TV is where the next tech revolution will be

I’ve been reading a lot of stuff over the last few days about what’s happening in TV. Especially about Samsung and their latest upgradable offering with gesture and facial recognition. All very impressive stuff. But, in many ways just a meshing of existing technologies from other sectors and form factors and nothing (as far as I can see) that is unique to or for the TV experience. Which is a shame really.

I’m not sure if I share the pundit’s view that TV is the next battle ground. It may be. It is certainly an area where there is plenty of room for innovation, which is in one way very good for the consumer, and in another very bad, as there will be winners and losers in a market land grab for TV, and some technologies will fall even if they are good.

So in some ways it’s a good time to buy a new TV and in others it isn’t. Maybe I’ll wait a couple of months or more.

Making my G1 useful

I remembered that I still have an old Android G1 knocking around. So I thought I’d upgrade it and see how useful it could be, perhaps using it with Tasker and PAW Server. It’s going to take a little while to get it all up and running though as this old G1 is on Android 1.5.

One thing that is quite interesting though is the ability to connect a G1 to an Arduino, with a little messing about of course. I might just give that a go.
