Learning more about Android

Whilst this post isn’t about NanoLoop it is about how things are different between iOS and Android.

I’m starting to get better at that, and better at understanding the way Android works. The guide book I bought the other day has help to turn the corner a little, and I’m starting to see some ways I can make better use of what Android has to offer.

Getting Serious about Android (at last)

I bought this a couple of weeks ago with the intention of getting more serious about doing stuff with my Android device, or rather devices as I seem to have 2 now. I’m going to give it a proper go and see if I can’t do something meaningful with these very soon.

I guess I haven’t really explored the possibilities of Android properly and I should sort that out.

So hopefully over the next few weeks I’ll be posting on how I’m using Android more successfully, and not just for music related things either.

More Processing, More Android

Finally got back to using processing again today, and what’s more I actually got a few old sketches running on my Android phone which was a lot of fun. I’m really impressed with how processing for Android converts sketches for the web into something that works well on a small screen.

I’m hoping to not only keep the momentum going with this but also try to make something useful with processing hopefully. We’ll just have to see how that goes. For now it is great to be back making something again.

Getting Started with Android

So I’ve gotten myself an Android device that works at last. I finally got tired of trying to get my old G1 to do what it really wasn’t cut out for and got an Orange San Fransisco. So far so good, I’m enjoying playing with a new (sort of new) OS again.

It is an interesting OS to muck about with as there’s a lot more scope to get it to do things like scripting and running processing sketches, and that’s just for starters.

I’ll be posting more about getting used to Android of the stuff I’m doing with it.

An evolving workflow

As you probably know I’m a keen iOS user and always looking for ways to improve my workflow for ideas, things to investigate
and make both my online and offline life simpler. For a little while I’ve been using instapaper to hold blog posts and pages that
I want to spend a bit more time with. I’m not sure what it is about instapaper exactly that makes it simple to work through material, but it does work. On thing I haven’t done as yet is it to share stuff. I’ll have to get into that next I think.

Messing about with App Inventor

I’ve been playing with Google’s Android App Inventor site, and it is a lot of fun to mess about with. However, at the moment, it is unlikely to be useful for any kind of serious musical application building.

There is talk of being able to introduce extensions to App Inventor so you could do more with it. Things like using Pure data would be useful if you could integrate that into what App Inventor is about, and maybe that will come at some point, but at the moment musical applications will be somewhat limited and toy-like.

Still. Good fun to play with.

Pythonista 2.0 is a massive leap forward

There’s loads of new things to explore in the latest version. Here’s what’s new: Pythonista is now compatible with all iOS screen sizes — from iPhone 4 to iPad Pro, and everything in-between. For larger projects, you can now use multiple editor tabs to switch between related files more quickly. The Pythonista app extension allows…

Processing 3 and the new sound library

The last time I used Processing I was messing around with the minim library for sound. Now, in version 3, there’s the new sound library and it looks (and sounds) amazing! I’ve only played with it a little but so far the example code looks really straightforward to read and understand. I might even start…

Getting that TC going again

I found that I had an old Palm TC lying around doing nothing, and after a decent charge it powered up just fine. So I’ve installed iziBasic and ViziBasic on it to see what it can do and more importantly what I can do with it.

I’ve got some new ideas for a few palm OS apps (not webOS). These will almost certainly follow in the footsteps of my older apps which are all sound toys, but I want to see if I can do anything with infrared communication between apps.

Let’s see what I can come up with then.

So NinerPaint is coming to iOS

NinerPaint was a totally amazing app for Palm OS. It was one of the best Palm OS apps around. Now it’s coming to iOS, and, it’s coming back to Palm OS as well. This is brilliant news. As soon as it’s available I’ll let you know.
