Prometheus

So I’ve seen it now. It was an obvious choice to go and see, and I’ve read a lot of the chatter about the ending and how can it be a real prequel etc. Well, I enjoyed it, and that’s about all I really think I need to say. It was an interesting film, some good concepts and a story that in some ways sets the scene for the Alien films, but doesn’t answer all your questions.

I think that’s best, because you never know, there might just be another Alien prequel coming too.

Sucker Punch

I watched this the other night. I wasn’t entirely sure what my expectations of the film were, but whatever they were, having watched it I can say that it is a thoroughly amazing film. In same ways the way it is constructed on a number of levels makes me think of Inception, which is a major favourite of mine.

As for the story itself, it is both moving and highly inventive. I really enjoyed it and certainly didn’t see how it was going to turn out. On the whole I’d thoroughly recommend it.

Avengers Assemble

So I went to see Avengers Assemble. It was awesome! What more is there to say? Well, for a start, it was a lot better than I was expecting. I didn’t think it would be nearly as good as it was. It was a lot funnier than I thought it would be too. But then it was directed by Joss Whedon, who is pretty good at that kind of thing. He’s only done one film before, Serenity, but that was an excellent film.

So I was impressed, and I really hope they do another one.

Unstoppable

I watched this film last night. I didn’t know much about it, but it was a really good, straightforward runaway train film. Nice performances good story, not bad at all. I’d recommend it.

The Blues Brothers

I finally got around to buying the DVD of the Blues Brothers a few weeks ago but only watched it this weekend. I got the extended version which has a lot of deleted scenes in it. It has an interesting effect on the film to be honest. It feels looser and more relaxed that the cinematic release, but it is of course a fair bit longer.

It’s great to see it again though. It’s one of those films that I think everyone should see at least once.

Appollo 18

This film was on my watch list for a long time, as I thought the trailer was quite interesting and the idea was intriguing. The actual film is ok so far, but not brilliant, and not entirely gripping. The story was quite predictable and you really could see what was coming from afar. It’s a shame really, as the story had some potential, but I think that the makers concentrated a little too much on the documentary style of the film and not enough on giving the story a little more edge to it.

Still. Another film to cross off my list.

Real Steel

I watched this on Friday night and had relatively low expectations of it. However, I have to admit to really enjoying it. Sure, it’s a slightly cheesy feel good film which is very family orientated, but if you know what you’re getting what’s wrong with that? Nothing in my book.

I thought that whilst it was relatively predictable it was thoroughly enjoyable and very entertaining. Well worth the watch if you ask me.

Kickass not quite so Kickass

This is one of those films that I really wanted to see for ages. So I saw it in HMV for £3 and bought it. What a disappointment though. I thought it was really gratuitous for most of the movie, although the ending wasn’t bad.

So, for £3 it wasn’t quite the bargain I thought it was. I don’t think I’ll be watching it again.

John Carter

I went to see this film over the weekend despite the terrible reviews it has been getting. Part of me wanted to see it just because the reviews are bad, and also in part because I just don’t really trust anything that film critics say.

So, what was it like. Well, frankly, I enjoyed it. Sure, it isn’t some masterpiece, but I’ve seen much worse films, in fact much much worse. The story was ok, the characters were ok, there were one or two surprises and the effects were good. Most of all it didn’t seem to take itself too seriously. I liked that.

John Carter isn’t going to be remembered as a great film or maybe even a good film by some, but as a piece of entertainment I thought it did a good job and whilst I wouldn’t go out and buy the DVD, I’d almost certainly watch it when it comes out on TV in however long that now takes.

True Grit (the real one)

Having recently watched the remake of True Grit I watched the original again. It’s fantastic, as good as I remember and better. John Wayne’s performance was great, and the line, the amazing line, was delivered brilliantly. I love that line.

I know that it isn’t the best film in the world, but it has hope and redemption and some great writing, so I don’t think the remake was even nearly as good as the original. I think it was a bit of a missed opportunity. Or maybe it just wasn’t for me.
