There were some deals on Big Finish over the weekend and so I decided to grab the “I, Davros” season and see what it’s like. It was very cheap.

Well, this category is about books. Not just reading, but often for me, listening, as I do love audiobooks a lot. Although you can probably tell that by now.
Some thoughts on Big Finish
If you’ve only ever been here (this blog) a few times, then you probably already know that I’m a massive big finish fan. It’s true. I really like what they do, and I really like how they do it. Some of the newer series that they’re bringing out have been amazing, and I think that they are just going from strength to strength. Even so, I thought I’d put down a few things I’d really like to see them do in the future, just in case they’re listening (although in all seriousness I doubt that they are).
Here’s what I’d like them to do:
- Create an audiobook series for the War Doctor. John Hurt’s performance in the 50th Anniversary episode was inspired, and the character he created shouldn’t be lost forever. There was a single audiobook / book that came out with a war doctor story, but it shouldn’t end there. Certainly not. I think that Big Finish would do an admirable job of creating a whole series for the War Doctor. I hope that they’re considering it.
- Day of the Triffids. Big Finish created a follow on story from Day of the Triffids called ‘Night of the Triffids’, which was really good. However, I wish they’d also do a remake of the original. I think that they could do a great job of this. It’s an excellent story and worth a retelling. They could do it so well.
- UFO, I’d love to see that back again, and I think that Big Finish could do it some real justice.
- Space 1999. Same again!
I’m not sure they’ll listen, or even be aware of what I’m saying, but who knows. Maybe, just maybe …
Doctor Who Companion Chronicles: Empathy Games
It’s always great to hear David Warner in a Doctor Who story, and he was very good in this one. This was one of the best of the batch that I got when the companion chronicles was on sale.
Doctor Who Companion Chronicles: The Catalyst
Not a bad story at all actually. A good solid companion story. I enjoyed this.
Doctor Who Companion Chronicles: The Stealers from Saiph
This was good. Very much in the style of the 4th Doctor, and with the amazing Mary Tamm, who was one of my all time favourite companions. She is very missed.
Doctor Who Companion Chronicles: The Time Vampire
This wasn’t a bad Companion Chronicles story really. I did mind it. It wasn’t the best I’ve heard, but it wasn’t the worst at all.
Doctor Who Companion Chronicles: The Child
Whilst this was quite cheap it didn’t really do anything much for me I’m afraid. I didn’t think much of the story really, it didn’t really appeal.
Doctor Who Companion Chronicles: The Pyralis Effect
This audiobook was on sale recently and as it was a very good deal and I’d not heard it I decided to grab a bargain. It was worth it actually.
Whilst it isn’t a particularly long story it was a good one. I quite like these short stories. They’re fun. They’re well written and nicely bite sized.
Doctor Who Companion Chronicles: The Invasion of E-Space
Another of the companion chronicles that I bought when they were on sale.
I especially liked this one as it picks up the story from e-space. The e-space stories were particularly interesting and I loved how they brought the fourth doctor’s final season to a close. So it was good to hear a little bit more.
Blake’s 7: The Liberator Chronicles – Remnants
In advance of next year’s new stories, Big Finish have given us this, which was nice. Only a short story, just an hour, but even so it’s nice to get another Blake’s 7 story before the end of this year. So I’m looking forward to hear it soon. Very soon!
