I was a massive fan of NinerPaint for Palm OS and now it’s coming to iOS soon, which I think will be brilliant.
Category: Mobile Applications
I’m a big fan of mobile applications. It started with the Palm OS and Windows Mobile, and has continued with iOS and Android. Who knows where mobile apps will go to next, it’s a journey, and an interesting one at that. If you’re looking for more on mobile apps then also check out the menu sections for pages on specific apps and things I’ve done with them.
Apple acquires Workflow, so what will that mean?
I’m a big fan of Workflow. It’s an amazing app for automating pretty much anything in iOS. I’ve been using it since it first launched and it’s got better and better with every release.
Now Apple has bought it. In some ways I think that might be good. It might mean that automation and even scripting becomes a part of iOS at its core. On the other hand it could be a bad thing. I’d hate to see something as innovative as Workflow get dumbed down by Apple. That would be terrible.
Only time will tell what happens next but my hope is that Apple really build on the foundations that Workflow have laid down and add more to it.

Actually the old PalmSounds mobile music app directory is quite handy for old Palm OS apps
That and the Palmorama library which has a lot of good stuff in it too. Of course a lot of those apps have gone and a lot of links lead to non-existent web sites, but then it was made in 2007, so what can you expect?
Remember there’s the RandomBus, and it’s going to get better too
Whilst mentioning VL tonifier I thought I’d also talk about another of my developing collection of bots, the RandomBus, which I launched a little while ago. It was fun to make and hopefully it’ll be fun for anyone who wants to follow it too. I’ve got some plans for the RandomBus, some interesting plans which I hope to get out in the next few weeks. When they come about I’ll let you know.
Just me jamming out with frekvens
A little jam with the amazing frekvens and Patterning.
App Inventor getting updated
I haven’t used Android App Inventor in age, so when I got an email from MIT telling me about what they’re doing with it, it came as quite a nice surprise, especially as they’ve got new stuff planned for it, such as …
- Better support for multiple screen sizes and densities (responsive design).
- The Backpack provides a way to copy and paste blocks between screens.
- The App Inventor Gallery lets you exhibit and share your apps for collaboration and remixing.
- App Inventor Services (coming soon) lets you create apps that can run in the background.
- App Inventor Extensions (coming soon) let advanced users augment App Inventor’s capabilities without limitation by
- creating and sharing new components.
- The Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) component lets you build apps that control BLE devices, and experiment with mobile apps and the Internet of Things
All of which will be quite interesting to have a play with. The other cool thing in their email was Thunkable. Which is a version of App Inventor which is run by a commercial outfit. I think I might have a try of that soon.
Now is probably a good time to get back to trying out App Inventor anyway. I did play with it a long time ago, with a view to seeing if it could be used for audio apps, but really it couldn’t. I wonder if any of the new features coming to it will help with that?
New music: Drab Grey
And now there’s the RandomBus
I’ve mentioned this on PalmSounds just now but, as I’ve already made a bot called the Wisdom of Pullo and talked about it here a number of times, I thought I’d mention my new one, the RandomBus, which I’ve just launched. It was fun to make and hopefully it’ll be fun for anyone who wants to follow it too.
Going back to Day One (Classic) because Day One 2 just doesn’t work
After a few days of using the latest version of Day One (the journal app), I’ve decided that I just doing like the big update. Version 2.0 just doesn’t work for me at all. I was really looking forward to the new version of this app, but it really hasn’t worked out for me. As far as I can tell there isn’t enough in the new version that actually worth me using to make it worth switching over completely.
I’m not using multiple journals, I thought I might but in the end couldn’t think of a use for it. The only other thing I thought would be really good was the ability to add multiple photos. Well even that isn’t big enough to put up with all the down sides from version 2.0.
I thought I’d be impressed, but sadly I haven’t been at all. The worst thing was the widget, which was completely ruined. Version 2 had a widget that was just pointless and boring.
All I can say is how disappointed I’ve been with this whole thing. It was built up to be an amazing update, a new app, and I paid for it again only to find out I’d spent money on something that was a massive backward step. Perhaps it will change. Perhaps it will get better, but until I see some evidence of that I’m going back to Classic even though I know that won’t get updated and will very quickly become abandonware.
It is nothing but a very sad state of affairs that a developer makes you pay for something that is this poor.
