Finished the comic, watching the show

Continuing my theme of being into retro space opera, I’ve finally got around to finishing the comic version of the start of Space 1999, at least the first edition anyway, and I was surprised by just how closely it follows the original episode.

It’s quite interesting to read the comic and watch the old series at the same time! Although having just had a look for series two it seems to cost a fortune!

New mobile version

I’ve upgraded the mobile version of the site. It should look a bit different now and a little nicer too. Hopefully it’ll give me a little bit more freedom to make the mobile version a bit different from the desktop version.

Over the next few days I’ll be tinkering with different themes for the mobile version, so if you see it change it’s just me playing.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

I always think that the middle film is the difficult one. I thought that about the Lord of The Rings trilogy and I expected the middle film in the Hobbit to be difficult, but, I must admit that it was really rather good. If I had any complaints it would be that at some points the special effects looked a little too game-like. Aside from that I really enjoyed it. The 3D wasn’t bad either, it didn’t encroach on the story and it was quite subtle too.

So, overall I thought it was really good. I’m looking forward to the next and final part, and then I’ll have to get all the extended versions and try to watch them in a whole day!

Doctor Who: The Companion Chronicles – Tales from The Vault

I bought this as the story had Mary Tamm in it. I hadn’t realised that she only had a really very small part in this, which was a bit of a disappointment really. However, as a story it was really very good and actually great to hear so many of the companions from the past again.

I’ve got another couple of companion stories to listen to, which I bought simply because they were Mary Tamm stories. I’m hoping she’ll be in them a little more than in this one though.

Tydlig, Calculator Reimagined

I saw this app for iOS and knew that I had to get hold of it. It’s a very different way of calculating anything, and when you look at it and use it for any sort of calculation it is very intuitive, allowing you to take the result of one calculation into another.

In some ways it’s like a little spreadsheet for simple calculations. It’s a good start, but I think it needs some more work. I’d like to see the ability to save little calcs and also to schedule updates to them. I think it would be very useful if you could use simple variables in the calcs too. Things like today’s date would be useful, and I’m sure that there’s more too. I’d also like to be able to back up my calcs to dropbox.

Anyway, it’s a good start and I hope that the developer will take a it further.

A few things I’m looking forward to (musically that is)

These three have been on my mind so I thought I’d write them down …

  1. An album from Doc Pop which should land at the beginning of February. I’ve seen a video from it which I loved so I’m really looking forward to the whole album, especially as it was due late in 2013.
  2. Imogen Heap’s new album which is due soon I think. I haven’t liked everything she’s done but she’s always interesting and I like her lyrics a lot.
  3. Blancmange. Lots of things really. An album of remixes I think, some new material and another tour which I’ll do my best to be at.

Sure, there’s other things, but these three have been on my mind today so I thought I’d share them.
